The Sparrow
Memory plays tricks.
For example, I can't remember —
were there sparrows in Chernobyl, or not?
There weren't, I think. But perhaps
I just didn't see them, like anything
commonplace, natural and so,
unremarkable?
But they were there,
chirrupped and bathed in the dust...
Or maybe... I don't know.
In short: if somebody could tell me
precisely, were there sparrows
or were there not — I'd be grateful.
It distresses me, you know.
